I guess we've all driven through the country side, and seen the mounds of prickly pear cactus adorning dilapidated mobile homes, so often used in those tastefully painted tractor tires.

Opuntia microdasys comes from Mexico and is a popular species of cactus. The many-jointed plant can reach a height of 20 inches and the joints can reach 4 inches across.

Your Prickly pear (Opuntia) is thirsty! Cacti, especially pad type cacti need more water than what is commonly assumed. In their natural habitat they will survive with very little water, but they won't thrive.

The largest cactus genus is Opuntia, jointed-stemmed species recognizable by the fleshy stems made up of either cylindrical (in the cane cacti and the chollas) or flattened (in the prickly pears) joints called pads.

Prickly Pear Cacti (Opuntia species): Low mat-forming prickly pears are very easy to grow. Always wear heavy gloves when handling prickly pears.

Well, needless to say, opuntia never made it as a dry-land forage crop for the thirsty parts of the world. As it turns out, thornlessness in cacti is in part genetically controlled, but also environmentally controlled.
