Blood Oranges
Blood oranges are a specialty orange with dark red to burgundy flesh. The peel/skin is usually tinged with red giving an indication of the color beneath.

Mock-orange (Philadelphus; also Mockorange, Mock Orange, Syringa) is a genus of about 60 species of shrubs from 1 to 6 m tall, native to North America, Central America, Asia and (locally) in southeast Europe.

Mock Orange, Philadelphus coronarius, thrive in full sun or light shade in almost any soil, but do best in moist but well-drained soil supplemented with peat moss, leaf mold or compost.

Mock orange has no serious pest or disease problems. There is some susceptibility to aphids and leaf miners, the latter being more of a nuisance than a threat.

Sweet or soure orange (a feral citris hybrid) can occasionally be found growing in hammocks and disturbed sites in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Manatee Counties. It is native to southeast Asia but escaped cultivation.

The reddish-orange pustules on the leaf undersides contain numerous spores called teliospores that remain embedded within the leaf. Under humid conditions the teliospores germinate to produce a second spore type called a basidiospore.

Orange refers to a citrus tree (Citrus sinensis) and the fruits of this tree. It is a hybrid of ancient cultivated origin, possibly between Pomelo (Citrus grandis) and Tangerine (Citrus reticulata).

Oranges are probably native to Southeast Asia and did not reach Rome until the 4th century. The lime (C. aurantifolia), credited with combating scurvy at sea in the hands of Captain James Cook, is also thought to have originated in Southeast Asia.
