The Ornamental Pear is a deciduous narrow conical tree growing broader with age, thornless and produces no edible fruit. The Bradford Pear grows in a classic "lollipop fashion" making it a popular choice for some landscape plantings.

Of the one or two Pears that may be planted for ornament one is P. Bollwylleriana, from C. Europe, which produces in spring an abundance of small white blooms in clusters; and another is P.

The ornamental pears are as colorful in autumn as they are in spring. Depending on variety and weather conditions the leaves turn to shades ranging from yellow to red to deep burgundy.

The new kid on the block in the Egg and Us arena is the Fastigiate European Hornbeam. Hopefully this fine tree will be used with more moderation than the omnipresent ornamental pear.

This is a disease specific to apples and other trees and shrubs including Cotoneaster, Pyracantha and Sorbus. A closely related fungus, Venturia pirina, causes a similar disease on fruiting and ornamental pears only.
