Pachystachys comes from the Latin words pachys meaning large and stachys meaning spike.

Huge, to 8" high, scarlet pinecone-like blooms are borne in summer atop the large deep green tropical foliage. An unusually large growing variety.

lutea is the only suitable Pachystachys for indoor cultivation. There is another species, the P. coccinea, but it's a much larger plant that's really only suited for use as a medium shrub.
