Painted Cup (Indian Paintbrush) Castilleja coccinea Painted cup is an annual or biennial that is parasitic on the roots of other plants. Painted cup is endangered in the state of Connecticut.
Other indigenous wildflowers of the family include species of beardtongue, or pentstemon (genus Pentstemon); gerardia, or false purple foxglove (Gerardia) [for John Gerard]; painted cup, or Indian paintbrush (Castilleja); and figwort (Scrophularia).
Castilleja coccinea (Scrophulariaceae) - Also known as "painted cup", it is a member of the snapdragon family. Although my book says that it blooms in early summer, this one was photographed in northern Wisconsin Labor-day weekend.
