All painted fern varieties have broad silvery leaves, but 'Ursula's Red' differs in that the centers of its leaves have a wide, showy burgundy band in spring. Spreading from rhizomes, it quickly doubles its size in one growing season.

 


But the painted ferns that have done the best are some planted in a bed filled with old potting soil. This bed receives sun from noon to 4 p.m. but is far enough from the trees that there is no root competition.

Japanese painted ferns light up the shade with colorful foliage that combines well with other shade tolerant plants such as hostas, dicentras and epimediums.

Japanese painted fern is one of the most popular cultivated ferns. It is a deciduous fern with a weeping habit which typically grows to 18" tall and features a slowly spreading clump of triangular, variegated fronds (to 20" long).

Athyrium niponicum var pictum is a fern that vanishes utterly in winter & just barely shows its first nubby little fiddleheads again late in February, returning in ernest toward the middle or end of March or early April.

Japanese Painted Fern (Athyrium niponicum ‘Pictum'): The deciduous fronds of this fern are a mix of silvery-gray, green and burgundy on dark purple stems. It grows 10 to 15 inches tall.

We first saw this amazing selection of the deer-resistant Japanese painted fern on a West Coast trip in 1999 and have been patiently waiting for adequate stock to offer. Actually, "patiently" might not be a good choice of words.

The Lady Fern and Japanese Painted Fern are commonly found in nurseries, though fern specialists sell other varieties. Evergreen in mild climates, fronds turn brown after a few winters. These dead leaves shelter new growth in spring and act as mulch.

Light colors -- white, cream or pink -- stand out in the shade like the silver and pink tones of Japanese painted fern and the creamy yellow shades of some hosta varieties.
