Sabal minor or Dwarf Palmetto is a very hardy palm with mostly underground stems native from North Carolina to Florida and west to Texas and Oklahoma.

Small palm with very short stem. Fan-shaped, bluish green leaves reach up to 3 feet long and appear to be sticking out of the ground because the stem is so short. In summer, arching panicles of creamy flowers reach up to 6 feet.

It has a variety of pharmacological and culenary uses, as the fruits, leaves and seeds are all edible. Saw palmetto is located in Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina and possibly Texas (Kartesz, 1999).

MEDICINAL: Used for all wasting diseases. Also very useful for all diseases of the reproductive glands and organs.

Saw Palmetto, Scrub Palm (Serenoa repens): Saw palmettos are native to coastal areas of the Southeast and most areas of Florida. They are a low, spreading, fan-type palm with stiff leaves and saw-tooth-like leaf stems.

Saw palmetto is a small hardy fan palm whose stem usually remains below ground or runs just along the surface.

Bermuda Palmetto. Endemic, the only native palm tree, a cabbage palm with a short stem and large leaves. Older specimens can be 30 feet high.

Sabal minor (dwarf palmetto): Slow, low-growing fan palm to 60cm (2ft) with large stiff blue-green leaves. Cold tolerant to -12°C (10°F), but requires hot summers. Most suitable in a sheltered well-lit south- or west-facing position.
