any species of the genus Cortaderia, tall South American plants of the family Gramineae ( family) cultivated in warm climates for ornament.

Pampas Grass can grow to an impressive size for grass, about 8-12 feet tall. Its leaves are only .5 inches to .75 inches wide but can be 10 feet long. It grows in large clumps called tussocks. Each tussock is about 12 feet tall with many plants in it.

This pampas grass makes a mound of fine foliage that arches and weeps, producing a large dense base for the flowers. These come in late summer or early autumn and are long lasting.

Description
Cortaderia selloana is a large ornamental grass that is native to South America, in particular the pampas grasslands, hence the common name.

This clumping, drought-tolerant grass is one of the best pampas grasses you could grow.

Pampas grass has long been a popular lawn highlight in the south where it looks great alone or arranged in groups of several clumps. Because it is inexpensive and fast growing it also makes a great screen for hiding unsightly views.

Cortaderia selloana 'Pumila' AGM: Pampas grasses have been much maligned, but this smaller cultivar is elegant and mixes well with other perennials and shrubs. Height: 1.5m (5ft).

The back yard had been a fenced in play area for children & a big dog. There was a mere lawn with bramble patches at each end & a homely chunk of pampas grass breaking up the monotony, & none of that we kept.
