Papaya plants can also be grown from cuttings, which should be hardened off for a few days and then propped up with the tip touching moist, fertile soil until roots form.

The papaya is a herbaceous, fast-growing shrub that grows best in tropical and subtropical climates where it will flower continually, but it will perform in colder climates from high summer to early fall.

Carica papaya. Pawpaw. Originally from southern Mexico and Costa Rica, widely grown on the tropics and sub tropics. It was first brought here on the immigrant ship Edwin in 1616.

---Description---A small tree seldom above 20 feet high, 1 foot in diameter, tapering to about 4 or 5 inches at its summit.

Papaya can be severely debilitated by virus diseases, but there are no major insect or disease problems with most of the tropical fruits in South Texas. The major disease of citrus is foot rot, which can kill the tree.

Season: Best quality comes during warm months July to October. Some fruit all year. Fast growing herbaceous plant with thick, hollow trunk. Leaves lobed to 2' across.

As with all papayas, babaco is not a tree but a large evergreen plant that resembles a small palm. It grows quickly to its mature height of about six feet and width of about four feet.

Unlike our native son, this colocasia flower has the scent of papaya, according to Tony Avent of Plant Delights Nursery in North Carolina.

The species name carica means having papaya-like leaves. The fruit, which is called anjeer, may be obovoid, top-shaped, or pear-shaped, 1 to 4 in long, and varies in color from yellowish-green to coppery, bronze, or dark-purple.
