The peanut plant grows to about about 60 cm tall. It has small yellow flowers (1-2 cm long). The flowers bloom for only about half a day; the blossoms are self-pollinating.

This familiar agricultural crop is used in peanut butter, peanut oil, candy and other products. Plants look like small sweet-pea bushes and grow best where summers are long and hot.

Peanuts, Arachis hypogaea, do best during a long, hot growing season. Plant them in early to mid April, or when the soil has warmed sufficiently.

Lore: Many Native American people used the root for food and especially the underground fruit or "hog peanut". Not only would they collect this "peanut" from the ground around the plant but would rob the larders of mice that had gathered them.

Thick, green foliage grows from single stem. Tubers grow directly under plant for 2 feet. Yeild per plant is 2 to 5 pounds. Tuber is golden and raindrop shaped. When planting, space 16 inches apart, in rows.

Smear peanut butter in globs on the limbs of some other trees where there's nothing to harvest. The squirrels will get peanut butter stuck to the roof of their mouth & in their cheek pouches.

Polystyrene foam (StyrofoamTM, Aerolite, Packing Peanuts) - non-deteriorating; organic. Nonporous. pH = neutral.
Polystyrene foam is a light, white, durable solid plastic with closed foam pores.

Peanut shapes work well with the head of the peanut smaller than the bottom. Simple shapes are usually better (don't recreate the map of the Brazil or China!). Dig a hole 5 x 7 feet wide and 18" deep.

Parrotlilies grow from clusters of white peanut-sized tubers arranged like the spokes of a wagon wheel.

Noteworthy characteristics: When crushed, the foliage smells like unsweetened peanut butter, thought it is often described as "fetid."
Care: For best bloom and berries, plant in full sun in rich, well-drained, loamy soil.

For example, lesser galangale often flavours the peanut sauce (sambal kacang) made from ground peanuts, sweet soy sauce (kecap manis), raw spices (chiles, garlic and lesser galangale) and tamarind water or lime juice.

Whether it be a snap trap or live trap, bait it with peanut butter or bacon and place it in mouse runways. In the garden, delay using fluffy mulches such as straw until late in the season.

Slip it into a decorative cachepot (if it lacks drainage holes, add Styro-foam peanuts or gravel to the bottom to elevate the plant; if necessary, trim down rim of plastic pot to fit).

The leaves and flowering stems arise from a peanut-sized corms that are 2 to 3 inches below the soil surface. The larger corms give rise to several flowering stems. Flowering size corms are produced in two years from seed.

For a south-facing window try Comb Flower with its decoratively variegated leaves (protect from direct sun). Peanut Plant also likes bright light, as does Desert Privet with its variegated leaves.

Spread 5 -10 cm mulch of organic material like peanut shells, pine needles, or bark chips over beds to keep the soil moist and the roots cool. Renew regularly.

Guiana chestnut is grown both for tropical effect and for its edible nuts. It can also be potted up as a houseplant. The nuts taste sort of like peanuts. They are harvested when the seed pods burst and eaten raw, roasted, or fried.

The seeds can be boiled, baked or fried and have the flavour of groundnuts (peanuts). The milky latex of the tree can be used for caulking boats.

The sprays of yellow-green foliage are fragrant, scaly, and set with small cones no bigger than peanuts. Cedar doesn’t grow as tall as Douglas-fir, but makes trunks as thick, and lives as long. The campus has plenty of both.

They are extremely high in calcium, manganese, copper and iron. Few plant sources contain higher levels of vitamin B1 (e.g., sunflower seeds, fresh peanuts). Sesame also has healthy antioxidants or lignans.

Strong odor (some are reminded of peanut butter) when broken.
Bark: Thin, light brown to gray, resembles the skin of a cantaloupe when young, later turning darker gray and rough.

Loquat chutney is a condiment for cold meats. Loquat jam and ginger jam are delicious on toast or bread or mingled with peanut butter. Loquat pies make good eating. See Loquat Lane off Harrington Hundreds Road in Smith's Parish.

The wood of ailanthus is soft, weak, coarse-grained, and creamy white to light brown in color. All parts of the tree, especially the flowers, have a strong, offensive odor, which some have likened to peanuts or cashews.
