Penstemons or Beardtongues are usually growing as perennials with a basal leaf rosette and several upright growing stems in summer with numerous showy, white, red, rose, blue, or bluish lilac trumpet shaped flowers.

Penstemons are a group of perennials which are deservedly popular. They flower in the later part of the year, but are usually showing colour by end of July - or a little earlier.

Penstemon tenuis is a Texas Native found in and near the Gulf Prairies and Marshes of the state. It is for this reason that this Penstemon will do well where most will have trouble.

This short-lived perennial, often treated as an annual in colder climates, is grown primarily for it's pretty, tubular, two-lipped flowers (all colors but blue and yellow).

Penstemon comes from the Greek words pente, five, and stemon, a stamen, referring to the five stamens. Rupicola means growing on rocks, as this western native does in its native haunts.

Penstemon
Penstemon is a western United States native that has colorful tubular flowers on tall spikes. This prairie plant thrives in hot, sunny conditions and is a stunning addition to wildflower plantings. Another common name is beardtongue.
