Peony

Paeonia officinalis is a European peony, the first to bloom in late spring. The flowers are double pompons up to 4 inches across. The foliage remains attractive until fall, disappearing underground entirely for the winter.

This stunning herbaceous woodland peony has upright red-mottled stems and dark green leaves that are elliptic or lance-shaped with rough margins. It bears usually solitary, single creamy white to pale pink blossoms that are cup-shaped and elegant.

Flowers: double at first, single later; peony-like flower; 12-20 cm (6-8 in); deep violet-blue sepals suffused with purple and red and golden stamens. Flowers late spring and early autumn. Leaves are ternate. Pruning -light. The best double clematis.

Make certain that the eyes will be no deeper than two inches when the planting is completed, or your Peony may fail to bloom. If potted peonies are being planted, plant them at same level as they are growing in the pot.

With such a wealth of modern peony varieties to choose from, it's easy to overlook the species, but some are well worth growing. This lovely one comes from southern Europe.

From late winter to early spring large white peony-form flowers with a golden boss of stamens appear on this handsome evergreen shrub. The leaves are dark green and glossy and provide a great backdrop to the luminous flowers when they appear.

200cm, erect growing woody shrub peony from Yunnan Province, China. This beautifful species is similar to Paeonia suffruticosa, yet leaves have less segments and it makes large, pure white flower cups with a strong sweet musk fragrance.

The Lady Laura Camellia blooms mid season with peony-like blooms that are a pink color with rose streaking. Camellia japonica 'Lady Laura' comes from T.E. Lundy of Florida and has a medium growth rate with an upright growth habit. Syn. 'Laola Furen'.
