Petunias
From large, sweeping landscape beds to a few pots on a balcony, petunias reliably provide a long blooming season.

Care: Provide full sun and well-drained soil.
Problems: Petunias in general are relatively trouble free, but they are sometimes bothered by aphids, flea bettles, slugs, snails, root rot, gray mold, late blight, or tobacco mosaic virus.

Petunias are grown from seeds. Petunias can be directly seeded into your flower garden or seeded indoors for transplanting later. For spring blooms, start your Petunias in pots and containers indoors six to eight weeks before the last frost.

Petunias have always been a favorite of mine in Red Deer AB,now I have turned my mother on to the red floribundas and my sister loves the wave petunias for her containers and hanging baskets.

Petunias grow well here at National Gardening, in a large, sunny raised bed near our parking lot. But pale yellow petunias have never inspired me.

Petunias are generally classified in 3 categories:
Grandifloras have very large flowers, up to 5 inches in diameter (12 cm). They are generally grown in containers because the flowers are rather fragile.
Floribundas have 3 inch flowers (8 cm) ...

Petunias are among the most commonly planted annuals because they're so easy to grow. If you think they're too old-fashioned, look again. There are many new varieties available in a wide range of colors and forms.

Petunias can be found in every color of the rainbow in solids, contrasting veins or edges, and star patterns. The flowers may be large or small, ruffled, fringed, or double. They bloom from spring until frost.

Petunias and Calibracoa were introduced into Europe from southern South America in the early 19th century along with a number of other common annual flowering plants such as scarlet sage, portulaca and the garden verbena.

PETUNIAS August-October. Single varieties are best.
Look well in beds alone or interplanted with Phlox drum- mondii.

It can take the heat of our hot southern summers making it a good replacement for petunias, and can be perennial in zones 7 and warmer. Superbells® Pink P.P.# 14968 has bright pink blooms with a dark center and throat.

In recent years, Petunias have been bred for smaller flowers in greater quantity, with a more prostrate or cascading growth habit. Petunia integrifolia has the added feature of having a dark throat to accentuate the vibrant corolla color.

Most baskets are only used during the summer months and are planted up with the old favourites, annuals such as pansies, petunias, Pelagoniums, lobelia, bizzy lizzie, etc.

Perennials are plants which have a more limited blooming period, but they live and bloom year after year. (carnations, columbine, chrysanthemums....) Here again nursery tags can be very helpful.
