The pin oak thrives in bottom lands or moist uplands and is often found growing on poorly drained clay soils. The acorns of the pin oak are an important food source for mallards and wood ducks during their fall migration.

Description
Quercus muhlenbergii is a Texas Native to the limestone soils of Trans Pecos, Hill Country, and the Blacklands. This is a large Oak that can get 40-60 feet tall and should be given plenty of room to grow, about 20-40 feet.

Pin Oak (Quercus palustris): Pin Oaks do well in zones 4 through 8 and transplant well. They adapt easily to city conditions, clay soils, and almost anything thrown at them. The only thing they don't like is an extremely alkaline soil.

Mature Height/Spread: Pin oak grows 60 to 70 feet tall and 25 to 40 feet wide. It has a pyramidal shape usually with a central trunk.
Growth Rate: A rapid grower, pin oak will grow about 18 inches per year.

Pin Oaks are native of the eastern United States where they frequently inhabit poorly draining swampy areas in full sun. Poor drainage wouldn't suit them so well "in captivity," though they can be surprisingly forgiving of imperfection.

The mechanism is obvious if you look at this image of a Pin Oak stem with its dormant buds. If all of the upper lateral buds break the following season, this stem will exhibit semi-whorled branching.
