The Small Scabious (Scabiosa columbaria ) is native to southern Europe, northeast Africa, & western Asia, where it grows typically in dry chalk grasslands.

Pincushion flower (Scabiosa atropurpurea), and common scabious (S. caucasica) are popular relatives. In fact, there are dozens of cultivars of the latter, some of which have been in cultivation for more than a century.

Scabiosa, commonly called sweet scabious, mourning bride, or pincushion flower (for its head of small, lacy flowers) includes several ornamentals and was formerly used as a remedy for the itch (scabies).
