"Pine needles make a very pleasant tea simply for the taste and have a mild diuretic and expectorant function as well.

The Pine family are naked seed plants even though the seeds are highly protected under the scales of developing cones. The female cones briefly become elongated, exposing the ovules to the pollen in the wind.

Red Pine

LEAVES: Evergreen needles in clusters of 2, slender, 4"-6" long, dark green, borne in dense tufts at the ends of the branchlets: snap easily when bent double.

All pine seeds are edible, but the seeds of this species are fairly small and mainly used as a seasoning. A tea made from the fresh needles is aromatic and high in vitamins A and C. A candy can be made by boiling the tender new shoots in syrup.

Jack pine was once thought to poison the ground on which it stood because no other trees and few ground plants would grow near it. In truth, many species grow with jack pine.

This pine's needles are marked with bands of yellow and green. The buttery yellow variegation on the 3- to 5-inch needles is present year-round, but intensifies as summer turns to fall and persists into winter.
