Pinks are well-loved garden plants, widely grown and cherished for their dainty flowers, often delicious perfume and their attractive blue-gray foliage that usually forms a low-growing, neat clump.

Cool-weather annuals, biennials, or perennials, their many fringed flowers look as if they were trimmed with pinking shears, winning them their common name.

Pinks are members of the Dianthus family, a group of over 300 species. This group of flowers includes Carnations, Baby's Breath, and Sweet William. So, the attractive and sweet scented Pinks belong to a great family of flowers.

Propagating pinks
Pinks are short-lived perennials or biennials, so new plants need to be raised every few years, either by seed or, in the case of named cultivars, by division or cuttings.

Even though Chinese pinks are usually treated as an annual, they are perennial in most areas of the southeast. I have had Amazon hybrids in my garden for four years, and they have proven to be reliable perennials.

Note that Dianthus allwoodii, Dianthus plumarius and Dianthus hybridus, known also as pinks, grow in the same conditions, may be propagated also by layering, and are hardy zones 3-8

About This Plant
Most dianthus have pink, red, or white flowers with notched petals. Sweet Williams are biennial or short-lived perennials covered with bicolor flowers in late spring.

Rather a surprising spectacle when in bloom in midsummer and covered with flowers that are an inch or more across in colors grading through rose-pinks to lilac, this stately tree grows to about 25 feet.
