Plum sawfly is a less frequent pest of plums than plum moth. The larvae tunnel into three or four fruitlets before going into the soil to pupate.
Plum Pudding is the first of the purple poinsettias so its form leaves a bit to be desired. Its growth habit reminds me of an octopus from an old Japanese sci-fi flick with arms reaching out in every direction.

Mexican Plum is a single trunk small tree that can grow up to 38 feet tall. Mexican Plum will produce showy white flowers early spring, these are followed by purplish red fruit in late summer which are great for making jelly and preserves.
Ideally plum trees are provided with rich moist loamy soil, but these tough trees flourish even without everything that would be best for them.

Japanese plums grow 15-20 feet with a somewhat wider spread. They produce round to heart-shaped fruit ranging in color from green to yellow and brilliant red to deep purple-black.

Locate these trees in early spring (February) when the various named varieties burst into very attractive blossoms in tones of pink and white.
Indian plum was the main plant in the understory. Mornings, during late winter, the flowers would light up the deciduous woodland whenever the sun peeked out of the perpetual clouds.
A suitable compost for Natal plum consists of 2 parts loam to 1 part peat moss to 1 part sand. Keep moist; fertilize every 3 to 4 months. Trim Natal plum anytime of the year. Natal plum is an excellent plant for bonsai.

Plum trees intrigue me, whether they are wild or cultivated, and whether people cherish them for beauty or fruit. Over the years I have enjoyed learning much about them.

Branches Don't Droop, Branches Resist Breakage. SelecTree lists no cultivars of diversifolia.
Plum Curculio. The plum curculio is a devastating pest of peaches and plums. The adult is a weevil. The female weevils lay eggs in the fruit, and the larvae feed on the developing fruit.
Plum, Apricot, Nectarine, Peach, Cherry, and Almond trees are all part of this tasty group. Not only can you eat the fruits of the several deciduous varieties, but most of the trees in this group offer a spectacular show of spring hues.

Usage

Burdekin plum is a tropical, rainforest tree which may reach 20 metres but which is usually smaller in cultivation. Leaves are pinnate consisting of 3 to 11 leaflets. They are dark, shiny green with bronze new growth.
Bright red, plum shaped, paste-type fruits with meaty interiors. Determinate plants. Ready to pick about 76 days after plants are set out. GARDEN HINTS: Fertilize when first fruits form to increase yield.
Small papery plum-coloured pincushion-like flowers surrounded by a ruff of wine-tinted bracts are produced from June to August above deeply lobed dark green leaves.

Fruit from trees can be removed by shaking the tree when fruit are approximately one inch in size. Shake limbs with short strokes. To remove fruit, branches can be "hit" with a plastic baseball bat.
