Euphorbia pulcherrima, commonly called poinsettia, is sold as a potted plant throughout North America. In its native sub-tropical habitat, it is a perennial flowering shrub.

Many believe that a two-year-old child died in 1919 after consuming a poinsettia leaf, but this is just a myth. Poinsettia leaves are not toxic, but they may cause an allergic reaction from the latex for those that are sensitive.

Poinsettias are named after Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first Ambassador to Mexico who brought the plant back to his plantation in the U.S. He grew the plants in his Greenville, S.C plantation and gave them out as gifts to friends.

These tropical shrubs and small trees with soft, downy foliage offer an unusual flower structure.

In the home, poinsettias prefer a night temperature of 60 to 65 degrees F and a day temperature of 65 degrees F. The soil should be kept uniformly moist, possibly requiring water 2 to 3 times a week.

If you have seen a poinsettia at Christmas then you have met a member of the Spurge family. The colorful bracts are common in the family. North American members of the Spurge family are succulent plants with milky juice and simple, but varied, leaves.

Cushion spurge is a relative of the poinsettia, and as such, its showy "flowers" are not really flowers but actually modified leaves called bracts. Unlike most of its relatives, cushion spurge is quite hardy -- reliable to zone 4.

Like poinsettias, the actual flowers are not the featured attraction. The florets are white, yellow, pink or orange in color and the bracts can be a variety of colors including white, pink, yellow, green, burgundy, or multicolored.

Try Euphorbia characias wulfenii, a drought-tolerant Mediterranean native that thrives in the Sunset demonstration garden. The lime green "flowers" are really bracts in this poinsettia relative. (Yep, they're in the same genus!) ...
