Poison Sumach
Poison Sumach (Rhus Vernix) - This is a shrub or, in its own country, a small tree with pinnate leaves, and growing in swamps in southern Ontario and the coast district of the eastern States.

Poison Sumac (Toxicodendron vernix) has compound leaves with 7-15 leaflets. Poison sumac never has only three leaflets.

Be careful of Poison Sumac, which has white fruit that hangs down, not red fruit that sticks up...NEVER put anything in your mouth if you aren't absolutely positive what it is...

Poison oak, poison ivy, and poison sumac were formerly included in the Rhus genus, but are now separated into their own Toxicodendron genus. These two genera are the only members of the family found across the frost belt of North America.

An easily grown evergreen relative of the mango, poison sumac and poison ivy. Very sensitive to cold, especially in warm winters followed by a freeze. Leaves are simple, leathery, light-green with a copper-red blush when young.

The family Anacardiaceae contains poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, and Schinus terebinthifolius, or Brazilian pepper-tree.

They have formerly been listed under genus Rhus and are often referred to as sumac in common speach: Toxicodendron radicans (Poison Ivy), Toxicodendron diversilobum (Poison Oak), Toxicodendron vernix (Poison Sumac).

In fact, some people are immune to the secretions of poison ivy and poison sumac. If you are unsure of your susceptibility, it is best to treat these plants with great care.

Some people, however, are able to handle the plants with impunity. R. venenata, called the POISON SUMACH or POISON ELDER, is a tall shrub with pinnate leaves composed of eleven or thirteen smoothish leaflets.
