Additional Comments: Called Pocon by the Native Americans, poke root was used as an emetic and externally for skin diseases. The Delaware people took it as a heart stimulant and in Virginia it was regarded as a strong purgative.

Virginian Poke (Phytolacca) - This N. American perennial, P. decandra, is from 5 1/2 to nearly 10 feet high, with reddish stems and flower stalks. The flowers, on cylindrical spikes, are at first white, but afterwards change to a delicate rose.

Most people outside of the American South probably have heard of this plant from the 1969 Tony Joe White hit song, "Poke Salat Annie". Poke salat is what pokeweed is called when you cook and eat it.
Spikes of hanging bell-shaped, rose-pink blossoms poke up from scalloped, glossy green leaves. Unlike traditional foxgloves, the petals of the bell lip flare open and outward. The prolific blooms are long-lasting and will repeat bloom for 3-4 months.
As little starts, "Wickwar Flame" can poke its limbs straight up, & out sideways, appearing all in all to be at war with itself, limbs stabbing at right angles to themselves, in all directions.
