Polyanthus Primrose, English Primrose
A long-time favorite, these miniature floral bouquets in a rainbow of colors are signs of spring. Excellent for bedding, edging and containers, they are especially effective with spring blooming bulbs.

The Polyanthus - Though the origin of this beautiful old-fashioned flower is somewhat obscure, it is considered to be a form of the common P. vulgaris with the stems developed.

Polyanthus Primroses (Primula polyanthus) (zone 3) are often erroneously called English Primroses. They are generally all hybrids of different varieties producing large clusters of flowers atop one foot stems.

Winter bedding plants: these mainly flower in spring, but cyclamen, winter-flowering pansy, viola, primula and polyanthus will flower intermittently during mild spells in winter.

Sow seeds of polyanthus and auriculas for flowering next spring. Lift and divide polyanthus after flowering. Hoe through flower borders regularly. Pull up the winter bedding plants after the middle of the month.

The garden 'Polyanthus of unnumbered dyes,' as the poet Thomson calls it in 'The Seasons,' is only another form (probably of the Cowslip or Oxlip) produced by cultivation.

To the daffodil fancier, these bulbs are called the "polyanthus group" -- literally "many flowers." All tazettas have a number of blooms at the end of the scape, not just one as seen in the common daffodil.

It's an evergreen of the polyanthus group. Its showy leaves make a fine choice for the winter garden, even though it does not bloom in winter as do so many other primroses.

Compound definite inflorescences are by no means common, but in Streptocarpus polyanthus and in several calceolarias we probably have examples. Here there are scorpioid cymes of pairs of flowers, each pair consisting of an older and a younger flower.
