It is sometimes confused with the pomelo (Citrus maxima), which is a close relation but is larger and pear-shaped. The grapefruit tree can grow to a height of 26 to 30 feet. Grapefruits are round, with a diameter of between 4 and 6 inches.
Important members of the genus Citrus include the sweet orange (Citrus sinensis), the sour orange (C. aurantium), the lemon (C. limon), the shaddock or pomelo (C. maxima), the citron (C. medica) and the lime (C. aurantiifolia).
It can reach the size of a large grapefruit or pomelo. The shell is so hard it must be cracked with a hammer or machete. The fibrous yellow pulp is very aromatic. Numerous hairy seeds are encapsulated in a slimy mucilage.
