Poppy Mallow (Callirhoe) - Handsome N. American plants of the Mallow order, of which some half-dozen kinds are known in our gardens.

 


Poppy Mallow
An outstanding and very attractive plant with low growing, deeply dissected dark green foliage that gives rise to an explosion of electric purple, single, upright flowers from July to early September. This plant behaves like an ivy.

Poppy Mallows belong to a small North American genus with some 9 species native of open spots in woods, meadows and prairies.

Description
Callirhoe involucrata is a low growing perennial with turnip or carrot-like taproots, thus making this plant more drought tolerant.

This plant resembles a rosy-purple poppy mallow that blooms all summer. The saucer-shaped flowers are held above prostrate red stems and fingered leaves.

A few of the most reliable flowers to plant in shortgrass meadows include chocolate glower (Berlandiera lyrata), dotted gayfeather (Liatris punctata) and poppy mallow (Callirhoe involucrata).
