An old-fashioned favorite that demands attention. Excellent tall background plant for the perennial border. Large, double flowers come in white, and pink. Leaves are slightly hairy, light green and rounded with 3 to 7 lobes.

 


A very common, low branching shrub or small tree with multiple trunks, it is native to Suriname it grows up to a height of 15 feet; has evergreen bipinnate, oblong leaves and axillary, compound, showy pink flowers, like a powder puff.

Golden Powder Puff (Parodia chrysacanthion): Mature plants are covered with golden spines and dense white wool on new growth. Small, yellow flowers appear in spring and summer.

The plant has a wiry green stem with a flowerhead that looks a bit like a flattened fluffy powder puff, with layers of petals around a darker heart. The foliage itself has slim lance shaped leaves.

At last I have discovered the name of my Powder Puff tree. I have the white variety, which is beautifully scented, is a strong grower and needs to be Kept under control. My neighbour has a young tree grown from one of my seed pods.

The popular Chater's Double Hybrids have dense, many-petaled flowers in a variety of colors, and 'Marjorette' is shorter with lacy semi-double flowers in pale pastels. 'Powder Puffs' has ruffled fowers, like, well, powder puffs.

Single-flowered hollyhock blooms are to 3 inches across and have the typical protruding stamenal column found in the hibiscus family. Double forms are available which look like powder puffs.
