Additional Comments: Prickly ash bark was a toothache remedy for the Native Americans, who also boiled the inner bark to make a wash for itching skin. It was brought to Europe in the mid-19th century for the same purpose.

The name Prickly Ash has also been given to Aralia spinosa (Linn.), the Prickly Elder, or Angelica Tree, the bark, roots and berries of which are used as alteratives.

The English name prickly ash refers on one side to the numerous thorns of the plant (which are even commonly found in the dried spice), on the other side to the pinnate leaves, which very much resemble those of ash (Fraxinus excelsior ).
