Primroses (Primula) provide you with early spring blooms in almost every color of the rainbow. They prefer cool temperatures, a rich humus soil (lots of compost and leaf mold) and partial shade.

Primrose Jasmine is a tall, slender stemmed evergreen shrub. It has dark green leaves and a square stem. The flowers are lemon-yellow and unscented these are normally seen in the winter and spring.

Primroses will brighten and shady corner. They look especially good massed under a tree or in a rocky setting. Primroses are a good choice for the north side of a house or as an early spring ground cover under foundation shrubs.

Primroses are a diverse group of plants with more than 400 species. They have a reputation for being somewhat difficult to grow, but until I've killed a plant at least three times, I refuse to give up on it.

The Primroses are herbs or slightly woody plants with usually basal or opposite leaves, but sometimes whorled, like the four-leaved loosestrife. Some species are aquatic, while many others will be found near the water or at least in very moist soils.

Cape Primrose is a medium-sized, stemless herb up, growing up to 15 cm tall, with a slender horizontal rhizome and a rosette of velvety, blunt- tipped, strap-shaped leaves that grow up to 30 cm long.

Water primroses grow to five or six feet tall; however some are only inches tall. Stems are branched and sometimes have long hairs. The leaves are ovate to lance-shaped, and up to six inches long.
