Plants of the Primrose Family
The Primroses are herbs or slightly woody plants with usually basal or opposite leaves, but sometimes whorled, like the four-leaved loosestrife.

Primula x pubescens (Primula auricula x Primula hirsuta) bears early in the season, umbels of many salverform flowers in white, yellow, pink, red, purple or brown, 1/2 to 1 inch wide.

The leaves of some species produce irritation to face and hands resulting sometimes in a form of eczema. This is caused by a secretion in the glandular hairs and is termed primula dermatitis.

Primula auricula or Mountain Cowslip has such beautiful blossoms beginning in early April, with later reblooms to be expected at least through June. It is shown here in two consecutive Aprils, 2003 & 2004.

Primula pulverulenta is a great favorite with those who grow primulas. It is tall and vigorous, with large, lettuce-like leaves and flower stems covered with farina (a sort of mealy bloom). The flowers are a deep pinky red with purple eyes.
