(prv´t), any plant of the genus Ligustrum, Old World shrubs or small trees of the family Oleaceae (olive family), some of which are common as hedge plants.

Privet is a bushy, deciduous or semi-evergreen shrub with oval to lance-shaped dark green leaves. White flowers borne in panicles to 2 inches long in early summer and midsummer mature to spherical black fruit.

Glossy privet is occasionally found in disturbed sites from the northern coast south to the central peninsula of Florida. It is native to Asia, but has escaped cultivation (Wunderlin, 2003) and is now naturalized in Florida.

Variegated Privet
Ligustrum sinense variegated form
This variety of variegated privet has better color, more white-cream and green, versus an overall gray look of the more common variety.

Variegated Chinese Privet is a semi-evergreen shrub that is useful for brightening any dull areas. The leaves are a matte green with irregular creamy white margins, variegation can fade in overly shady conditions and with excess cold temperatures.

This is a bushy deciduous, sometimes semi-evergreen shrub most often used for shrub borders and hedging. Leaves are rich dark green on top and yellowish green on bottom, elliptic-ovate, 1 to 2 1/2 inches long.

Privet Honeysuckle (Lonicera pileata), also called Boxleaf Honeysuckle, is generally under three feet tall, but can put on considerable width over time, five foot spread being common, with an eight foot spread possible.

Japanese privet can be easily shaped into hedges and other shapes with regular close trimming.
Several variegated selections of Japanese ligustrum are available and often offered at discount garden centers.

A new introduction, at a superficial glance this abelia looks a bit like golden privet. The leaves have a central spot of gold that is irregularly applied: the colour bleeds into the surrounding green with the detail differing from leaf to leaf.

Description:
Border Privet, if only moderately pruned on occasion (rather than regularly sheared), will have reasonably attractive white inflorescences in late Spring, attracting many bees and being slightly pungent in fragrance.
