Puya are subalpine members of the Bromeliacea from the Andean range in S America. Very easy and robust plants for a partially shaded spot in any rich, and well drained soil, good pot plants in any well drained, rocky to sandy soil with some humus.

In earlier studies, Bromelioideae were monophyletic, even when Pitcairnioideae were included (Crayn et al. 2004: matK + rps16), however, in some studies (Horres et al. 2000) Puya did not link with them (see also Jabaily & Sytsma 2010).

Hechtia is a genus of about 50 species in the Bromeliad family and resembles and is closely related to Dyckia and Puya but usually has clusters of small white flowers.

The largest herb in the world, Puya raimondii, grows in this region and can survive at high elevations up to 13,000 feet. The herb can also live for 100 years.

The leaf-margins are often spiny, and the leaf-spines of Puya chilensis are used by the natives as fish-hooks. Several species are grown as hot-house plants for the bright colour of their flowers or flower-bracts, e.g.
