A small evergreen tree with small glossy dark green leaves, some of them with a few teeth; easily mistaken for a young live oak at a quick glance. The flower is white, 1/2 in.

I forgot to include Soapbark Tree in the revision of my book Trees of Seattle. So, here it is . . .

Quillajaceae are vegetatively rather undistinguished with their spiral, serrate, stipulate leaves, although the conspicuous teeth appear to be hydathodal.

The dried inner bark of the soapbark tree (Quillaja saponaria) of the rue family, native to the Andes, has been collected also for commercial use in fire-extinguishing solutions and as an emulsifying agent for medicines and tars.
