In upper Lake Michigan, especially on perched dunes you may find the rare fascicled broom rape. It is a threatened species.

The Greek word for laurel is dhafni, named for the myth of the nymph Daphne, who was changed into a laurel tree by Gaea, who transformed her to help her escape Apollo's attempted rape. Apollo made the tree sacred and thus it became a symbol of honor.

Photosensitization has been reported in cattle after rape (B. napus) was consumed. There are also reports of abortions, goiter and blindness due to mustard consumption, but these are not major problems.

RELIGIOUS: Heather is carried as a guard against rape and violent crime. In potpourri, it adds protection. When burned with fern, it will bring rain.

In commercial agriculture and horticulture S. sclerotiorum is a major problem in lettuce, oilseed rape and sunflower production.

Annual bastard cabbage is also known as turnip-weed, common giant mustard, ball mustard, wild turnip, wild rape and tall mustard-weed. It is designated a terrestrial noxious-weed seed in the state of Texas.

In the summer, rape dust, guano, nitrate of soda and various patent Hopmanures are chopped in with the Canterbury hoe. Fish guano, or desiccated fish, is largely used; it is very stimulating and more lasting than some of the forcing manures.
