Reed Grass (Spartina Polystachya) - This tall grass is very graceful, with yellowish variegation and of tall habit. It is a free grower and gives a fine group of foliage in the mixed border.

Reed canarygrass is not found in Florida. The pictures above were taken in and around the Minneacpolis, Minnesota area. Though reed canarygrass is highly invasive, especially in northern states of the U.S.

Giant reed can float miles downstream where root and stem fragments may take root and initiate new infestations.

This giant reed is distinguished and architectural with its long striped leaves edged with white. The plant has a stiff upright habit, and the leaves arch elegantly outwards.

They are clump forming plants with reed-like stems and leaves that are narrow and arch to the ground. The flower heads are puffy plumes that form in late summer to fall and make good cut or dried flowers. Most species are moderately frost hardy.

Culture: Epidendrum X obrienianum is one of the best known of the reed stem hybrids. Reed stemmed orchids need an abundance of sunlight to flower, but shade the roots to provide a cool root run.

Some animals include seed eating birds such as the Double Collard Seedeater, the great Pampas Finch, the grassland Yellow Finch, and the Long Tailed Reed Finch.

Phragmites australis (frag-MY-teez), also known as common reed, is a member of the grass family. It grows in dense monotypic stands and can reach 15 feet in height.

Upright spreading flowers. Grows 9 to 12 feet high. Native - gray-green folliage - Average soil is best - (I personnally have found this plant with it feet in water.) One of the hardiest of the taller grasses.

Primary hybrid of a large flowered "reed" epi with a smaller (but greater in number) pink epi. The result is a nice medium red with the cinnabarinum lip and a higher flower count from the haemathantum.

Try planting leadwort in combination with feather reed grass, tufted hair grass, asters, buff-red flowered sedums, purple coneflower, and yellow, red or lavender-pink mums.

The Sweet Sedge is a vigorous, reed-like, aquatic plant, flourishing in ditches, by the margins of lakes and streams and in marshy places generally, associated with reeds, bullrushes and bur-reed.

Ginger is a perennial plant, with reed-like stems growing above the surface of the soil. Below the surface is the rootstock or rhizomes. These are not actually the root, but a swollen stem.

Allium schoenoprasum has been around for 5,000 years, but it was not until the Middle Ages that chives became cultivated. The name, schoenoprasum, comes from the Greek language and means reed-like leek. Indeed, these herbs look like reeds.

TRADESCANTIA An unusual mauvy-blue flowered plant 450 mm (1½ ft) in height. Its reed-like leaves remain tidy throughout the summer. A grand plant for the town garden. Quite likes semi-shade, flowers in July. My favourite, Isis, an Oxford blue.
