Scarlet runner bean is one of the older runner beans native to North America and cultivated for its edible and ornamental properties. I grow it for many reasons--mainly to feed hummingbirds and myself. In addition, the plant sets nitrogen in the soil.

'White Dutch Runner' has white flowers and also white seeds. Annual member of the Legume family. Pods produce high protein nutritious seeds which can be dried into beans. Young beans are eaten fresh as 'snap' beans.

Scarlet Runner Beans are notable among the world's many beans for several reasons. Unlike most beans the plant is perennial, albeit it is usually killed to the ground --or totally-- by winter frosts.

Runner beans are more popular for food in Europe. The immature pods are used like green beans. Their texture is a little coarser than green beans and so they are usually sliced lengthwise before cooking.

Runner beans, mange-tout peas, blackberries, loganberries and tomafoes can all be grown up walls. In boxes try the decorative red and green salad bowl lettuces, curly endives and red-leafed winter chicories.

Scarlet Runner beans, and other varieties of runner beans, are easy to grow. It's fast growing, climbing up to ten feet in a season. Plants will produce a profusion of pretty red and white flowers, amidst a heavy cover of leaves.

The flowers have only a slight scent, with no element of the vanilla flavour or aroma. Once pollinated, the ovaries swell and develop into fruits called ‘pods’ similar to long, thin runner beans over a period of four weeks.
