A notable exception is rye grass (Lolium), which is used as a sedative and vasodilator. It is considered poisonous in excess (Lust). Although most grass seeds are edible, they are not all necessarily economical.

The "nurse" grasses (such as rye grass), and the semi-permanent types will grow rapidly.

Rye grass germinates in the fall when the temperature at night drops. It is the cheapest grass used to overseed lawns in winter. Its blades are relatively wide, soft and watery. It also dies quite rapidly when the temperature climbs in the spring.

General purpose ornamental turf: 20-25g per sq m (¾oz per sq yd)

Other common names include Blue Lyme Grass, Sand Rye Grass. Use as an accent plant or a ground cover. Good for erosion control. Will tolerate beachside conditions.
