Description
Sage is a woody, hardy perennial plant with oblong, wooly, gray-green leaves that are lighter underneath and darker on top. Sage grows 2 to 3 feet or more in height and has a tendency to sprawl.

Dwarf garden sage (Salvia officinalis 'Compacta'): Smaller leaves and more compact habit than regular sage, growing only 10 inches high. Same sage flavor. Propagated by cuttings only; seeds are unavailable.

When used without modifiers, sage generally refers to common sage (Salvia officinalis); however, it can be used with modifiers to refer to any member of the genus.

One of these is sage (Salvia officinalis). Many scientists believe that rosemary is so similar to Salvia that it should be included in this group.

I am omitting the popular herb, Salvia officinalis, since it is a short-lived plant that does not like our NC climate.
The focus of this article is salvias which make good perennial garden specimens between Hardiness Zones 3 and 8.
