(sp´t), name for several Central American trees and their fruits. Sapotes, sweet and pulpy, are commonly seen in tropical markets and are usually eaten fresh, although some are also used in preserves, e.g.

 


Fruit: White sapote fruit ripens six to nine months from bloom. Some cultivars are alternate bearing. Fruit size varies from 1 inch to 6 inches for some of the newer cultivars.

General Notes
Unless harvested, fruit extremely messy, attracting flies, rats, bees. Roots are very invasive. SelecTree lists no cultivars of edulis.

The sansapote grows wild in dense forests from southern Mexico to Panama, on both coasts, and also in northern Colombia.
