So what exactly is a Satsuma and Satsuma Bonsai? Satsuma is actually a fruit tree that is with the same family of tangerine and oranges all known in botanical world as citrus reticulate.

Description
Citrus unshiu 'Seto' is a variety that was developed in Japan by controlled pollination of 'Miyagawa' Satsuma. Seed was sent from Japan in the mid 1980's to the TAMU Research and Extension Center.

The cultivar, 'Armstrong' has glossy leaves, fragrant flowers and small fruit on small evergreen tree. C. reticulata is a rounded large shrub with fruit that ripens in fall.

This is an 'Owari' satsuma tree.
Description
The Mandarin oranges are small, sometimes spiny, trees with slender branches, and lance shaped shiny evergreen leaves. The leaves are not trifoliate, but the petioles (leaf stems) are slightly winged.

Now there are Mandarins, of which there are four main types: the Satsumas of Japan (Citrus unshiu), the Mediterranean mandarins of Europe (C. deliciosa), the King Mandarins of Asia (C. nobilis) and the "common" Mandarins (C. reticulata).

Varieties of Mandarin orange include the Tangerine, Clementine, Dancy, Tangor, Satsuma and several new varieties.
In some varieties, notably the tangerine, the rind is loose and can easily be removed by hand.

'Clementine', 'Kinnow, 'Satsuma' - A few of the many varieties. Best fruiting occurs at warm, inland areas. Citrus grafted to sour organge root stock is resistant to Texas Root Rot. Has Fragrant Flower. SelecTree lists no cultivars of reticulata.

On a warm day this large-flowered clematis releases a delicious scent reminiscent of satsuma oranges. An ideal partner for a climbing rose shrub or tree it's best in partial shade since the delicate petals have a tendency to scorch in full sun.

The orangequat is a cross between the Meiwa kumquat and the Satsuma mandarin and produces a tasty kumquat-like fruit. The citrangequat is the result of a cross of kumquat and citrange (orange x trifoliate orange) and the fruit is very sour.

Cogongrass first appeared in the area around Grand Bay, Alabama as an escape from Satsuma orange crate packing in 1912. It was intentionally introduced from the Philippines into Mississippi as a possible forage in 1921.
