Jalap is a typical hydragogue purgative, causing the excretion of more fluid than scammony, but producing less stimulation of the muscular wall of the bowel. For both reasons it is preferable to scammony.
Stronger than the Powder of the Herb, prevalent against the Dropsy, being given daily with 10 to 12 grains of Scammony. A drachm of the simple powder, morning and night, especially in an infusion of Senna, may do wonders in Melancholy.
Convolvulus scammonia is the scammony of Asia Minor; a resin exuded from its roots are exported from Aleppo and Smyrna as a medicine. The most important commercial plant of the family, the , belongs to the morning-glory genus.
