LEAVES: Alternate, simple, 3"-6" long, with 7-9 narrow, bristle-tipped lobes, sinuses between the lobes go almost to the mid-rib.

Wide-spreading, large-trunked Oaks are known for their long life, strength and majestic beauty. They have many forms, but are mostly deciduous trees and some shrubs. Some like wet soil, while others prefer dry.

Deciduous tree, 70-80 ft (21-24 m), pyramidal, horizontal branches, branches generally not large. Lower branches generally do not sweep downward as pin oak (i.e., less pruning). Leaves 7.

This mature scarlet oak has a more rounded form that is typical of individuals grown in the open.
Description
A member of the red oak group, scarlet oak grows 60-100 ft (18-30 m)tall with a trunk 1-3 ft (30-91 cm) in diameter and a narrow crown.

Scarlet oaks, red maples and sumacs, for instance, have a slightly acidic sap, which causes the leaves to turn bright red. The leaves of some varieties of ash, growing in areas where limestone is present, will turn a regal purplish-blue.
