scarlet sage (Salvia splendens) is moderately-sized plant (growing up to 1 m tall) with hairless stems and leaf undersides. Its flowers are usually scarlet red, but may be a wide range of colours in cultivated plants.

Petunias and Calibracoa were introduced into Europe from southern South America in the early 19th century along with a number of other common annual flowering plants such as scarlet sage, portulaca and the garden verbena.

Of these the scarlet sage (S. splendens), native to Brazil, is best known.
