Scilla Bifolia - Not so well known as S. sibirica, but quite as welcome. In the very dawn of spring, and indeed often in winter, this bears rich masses of dark blue flowers, and forms handsome tufts.

10 (20)cm, an almost unknown, very rare Scilla from the Western Canary Islands growing in rich soil in shaded rock crevices. Broadly flat leaf rosette and rose colored racemes with contrasting sky blue miniature flowers.

Bulbous perennial that is clump-forming in habit. Leaves are linear, basal and reach 6 to 12 inches long in early summer. At the same time, racemes of star-shaped, light blue to lilac flowers bloom. Good for naturalizing.

Right off the bat this has to be gotten out of the way, to note that despite the species name of Scilla peruviana & common names to match, this is neither a native of Peru nor of Cuba.

Scilla peruviana is of interest for its name; it is a native of southwest Europe, not of Peru.

Scilla is one of the earliest spring flowers to bloom. Flowering for a remarkably long time they bear clusters of bloom spikes that offer scented deep blue flowers.

The horticulturists' squill is any plant of the genus Scilla, mostly spring-blooming low herbs with commonly deep blue but also white, rose, or purplish flowers borne along a leafless stem; the leaves are usually narrow.

Closely related to the scilla, glory of the snow is a member of the lily (Liliaceae) family, originating in the alpine regions of Turkey, Crete and Cyprus, where each year it transforms the landscape from snowy white to blue.

Known Hazards
The bulb is poisonous in large doses[4, 19]. The red form especially has a fairly specific action on rats[4, 57, 171]. The fresh bulb contains an acrid juice that can cause skin blisters[4].

Originally applied to the wild English hyacith or Blue Bell (Scilla nutans); later used in Scotland for this species, also known, therefore, as the "Blue Bells of Scotland".
