"Sedges have edges, but grasses have knees" is the familiar rhyme used to remember the distinction between sedges and grasses. Only the grasses have lumpy nodes on the flower stems, while most sedges have triangular stems.
Hop sedge is a sedge. Stems tuft-forming, 1-4 ft. tall; leaf blades to 1/2 in. wide; sheaths reddish-purple; inflorescence of 2-6 spikes, each spike 1-21/2 in.

Field Marks: This sedge has flat, crowded spikelets not arranged in large, branched clusters. It differs from most other similar sedges because it is an annual.
Placing the sedge peat or compost on top of the soil smothers the annual weeds and prevents them from growing and thus there is no hoeing to do at all. It is not necessary to put fresh compost on the soil each year.
This superb sedge, native from Quebec south to South Carolina, is a must for shade gardeners. Naturally occurring in dry woodlands, even underneath hemlocks, Carex appalachica is adaptable to almost all garden conditions...except swamps.
