Wild Senna (Cassia) - The only hardy member of a great family, with us it is nearly herbaceous, dying back, and so deserving a warm place in a free soil. It is best in the southern counties. N. America.

Bladder Senna are fully winter hardy, tall woody, deciduous shrubs with elegant feathered foliage and bright yellow flowers, which are followed by inflated, translucent and papery pods (capsules).

Description
Christmas senna is an open, sprawling, evergreen shrub that gets up to 12 ft (3.7 m) tall with about the same spread.

Senna (from Arabic sanā), the sennas, is a large genus of around 250 species of flowering plants in the family Fabaceae, subfamily Caesalpinioideae.

Wild senna is rare in Connecticut, and it is classified as a species of special concern by the state.

Wild senna is indigenous to Suriname and it is found in secondary vegetation or along riverbanks on moist and even wet spots.
It is also a host plant to many species of sulphur caterpillars, included the orange barred sulphure.

Europeans were introduced to a similar Senna by Arabs and upon arriving in the Americas the Natives here introduced them the this Senna. Used as a laxative by herbalist it is also found in pharmaceutical preparations.
