Showy white flowers of Serviceberry, seen through the still naked oaks, provide one of the first floral displays of spring on Pennsylvania ridges. The fruits are excellent food for birds, bears and other wildlife.

Downy Serviceberry, Juneberry, Shadbush
Colorful in all seasons, these deciduous shrubs and trees are especially conspicuous in early spring. Their plentiful white flowers bloom briefly before or with the unfolding of the leaves.
Serviceberry is sometimes confused with Amelanchier florida, and now called A. alnifolia var. semi-intregrifolia, set apart by their smaller flowers and rounder leaves.

This multi-stemmed large shrub or small tree (15 to 25 feet in height), is beautiful throughout the seasons. Fragrant clusters of snowy white flowers appear in spring, followed by edible violet-red berries.

About 25 species of deciduous shrubs or small trees. Leaves alternate, simple, entire or sharply serrate. Flowers white in small clusters (racemes), 5 petals, 10-20 stamens, and 2-5 pistils. Fruit globose, purple to maroon.
