The Shagbark Hickory tree has an ashy gray bark similar to birch trees except its bark separates into long strips, which give the trunk it's shaggy look.

LEAVES: Alternate, compound, 8"-14" long, usually with 5 leaflets, dark yellowish green above, paler, often downy beneath, margins fine-toothed.

Shagbark hickory is one of the largest hickories, growing to over 120 feet tall in a good site. Its main distinguishing characteristic is the smoky-gray peeling plates of bark that hang loosely to the straight, sparingly branched trunk.

Shagbark hickory creates an attractive display in autumn when leaves turn yellow.
Culture
Shagbark grows faster than other hickories, but it still takes some 40 years to reach commercial seed-bearing age.
