Smilax Aspera - A well-marked species, with angular and usually prickly stems, reaching a height of 5 to 10 feet. In color the leaves are dark green, with flecks of white on the upper surface, and the flowers whitish and fragrant.

Smilax officinalis has a twining stem, angular and prickly; young shoots unarmed; leaves ovate, oblong, acute, cordate, smooth, 1 foot long; petioles 1 inch long, having tendrils above the base.

Used as a substitute for Smilax Sarsaparilla is useful inpulmonary diseases and externally as a wash for indolent ulcers and shingles.

It is one of about a dozen Smilax species found in the state. About two dozen Smilax species range over the eastern two-thirds of North America; this species, earleaf greenbrier, ranges only in the southeastern coastal states (Kartesz, 1999).
