Snapdragons live up to their name -- when pinched at the base, their spicy cinnamon-scented flowers open and close like jaws snapping.
Snapdragons can be planted 2-3 weeks before the frost free date.
Snapdragons will grow in full sun to partial shade. Space the smaller varieties six to eight inches apart and the taller varieties 12 inches apart.
Snapdragons are an old-fashioned plant commonly grown in cottage gardens. They probably were one of our grandmother's favorite flowers. As a child, I remember squeezing the sides of the blossom to make the flower open up like a mouth.

Snapdragon is closely allied to the Toadflaxes. It is really not truly a native herb, but has become naturalized in many places, on old walls and chalk cliffs, being an escape from gardens, where it has been long cultivated.
Snapdragons have upright stems and velvet-textured, tubular flowers; between 10 and 15 blooms appear on each flower spike, opening from the bottom up.
