Sneezeweed are perennials from open spots in semi-moist prairies and sunny mountain meadows in North America. They develop numerous and very colorful, bright yellow flowers on medium to tall stalks throughout summer.

Our local native with bronze and mahogany single daisy-like flowers on stout branched stems in late summer. Petals have distinct tooth-like indentations; hence the common name, Dog-toothed Daisy.

Sneezeweed is a clump-forming perennial with sturdy, branching stems and mid-green leaves. In August and September, masses of 2-inch, daisy-like yellow flowers are borne in large, loose terminal clusters on leafy 4- to 5-foot tall stems.

The folkname Sneezeweed is not as commonly used as the names Yarrow & Milfoil, but arose because people with allergies commonly respond to yarrows.

Description:
Sneezeweed is one of the lesser-known members of the Daisy Family that blooms in mid- to late Summer, and while very attractive in flower, its winged green stems (not shown) are another interesting feature of this genus.

A new late-blooming sneezeweed (or Helen's flower) called Helenium 'Mardi Gras' has yellow petals splashed with orange-red. When grown in full sun, the sturdy, 90-centimetre-tall stems do not need staking. Spreads to 60 centimetres.
