By normal logic, the Japanese snowball viburnum (Viburnum plicatum) and the doublefile viburnum (Viburnum plicatum var. tomentosum) are backwards. For a plant to be recognized as a species, it must capable of reproducing by seed.

Light: Grow doublefile and Japanese snowball viburnums in dappled shade to full sun.
Moisture: Both varieties like a moist, but well drained soil. They do not do well in clayey, poorly drained soils.

The old-fashioned name of Snowball Viburnum applied to two white-flowering members of this genus: Sterile European Cranberrybush (Viburnum opulus 'Roseum') and Doublefile Viburnum (Viburnum plicatum, the sterile "species" form).

- Aphids, which cause twisting and curling of new growth: most susceptible are European highbush cranberry (V. opulus) and snowball viburnum (V. o. 'Roseum'). Wash off pests with strong jet of water.
